Milligan hits out at Police Minister over unsafe City Police Station

Shadow Minister for Police James Milligan has hit out at the Labor-Greens government and Police Minister Mick Gentleman following the announcement yesterday afternoon that the City Police Station is no longer a safe work environment and will require staff to move out.

Mr Milligan said it is disappointing hardworking police officers already doing a difficult job are having to work in stations that are ‘not fit for purpose’.

“For years now the Chief Police Officer has raised his concerns about the state of the City Police Station as well as a lack of police numbers and resources,” Mr Milligan said.

“This is yet another example of the Labor-Greens government neglecting our frontline police workers and it is simply not good enough.

“For the last four years I have also been calling on this government to do something about the Gungahlin JESC which is also unfit for purpose.

“Not only does the ACT continue to have the lowest number of police per capita in in the country but our hardworking police officers are not being provided with adequate stations and resources.

“Our police deserve to be supported and it is disappointing they are not receiving that support from the Police Minister who continues to fail in his portfolio.”

Mr Milligan said the Canberra Liberals have continually called for more police officers and will always stand up for frontline police and emergency services workers.

“The Labor-Greens government has underfunded and under resourced ACT policing for years and this latest fiasco is the result of that.

“The Minister must explain why he cannot provide the ACT with an adequate police force and resources that are fit for purpose,” Mr Milligan concluded.
